Clambakes have widely existed for a hundred years now. Originally introduced by the Native Americans in the New England area, they are now known as New England clambakes. With the Christmas season approaching, it’s a great time to plan a clambake with close friends and family for Christmas dinner.

The original clambakes were done in a pit and this pit was dug and a layer of stones were placed on the bottom of the pit. Then a layer of clams, potatoes, live lobster, and corn husks were laid on top the hot stones with fresh seaweed separating the layers.

The Native Americans would build a huge fire in the pit in order to cook the seafood and fresh vegetables. They would later place the seafood on top of the hot stones when the fire has been reduced to hot ash and embers.

There are lots of places where you can get fresh seafood for your planned clambake. There are basically two kinds of clambakes, the standard clambake and the super deluxe clambake wherein shellfish, mussels, shrimp, and other fresh seafood are added. Both of these kinds have clam chowder, lobster bisque, and other supplies needed to serve with the clambake.

The super deluxe clambake for Christmas is typically for bigger gatherings as it has more types of seafood and many partygoers will be able to find something they would like to feast on. With this type, you will be assured that you will never run out of food.

Modern cooking methods have replaced the old fashion preparation of the clambake. Now, clambakes are cooked on the stove, or on the grill. If you have a fire pit, you can cook your clambake there. Clambakes are a wonderful way to throw an outdoor party, and are more fun while camping. As an added bonus, outside cooking means minimal clean up.

A clambake is a great idea to consider for your Christmas party. Unprocessed fresh foods such as seafood and shellfish are especially healthy and nutritious. A clambake also offers your guests a festive party atmosphere. This makes for a very special alternative to the traditional, and usually less nutritious party foods a host often makes available to party guests.

So how about having the traditional clambake for Christmas celebrations? It would surely make a great conversation starter - as it is not usually done by party hosts. What’s more, the clambake full of nutrients is far superior and interesting than the typical junk food and take-outs people usually have.
